In light of the two methods, we at MITE have devised a network arrangement that can encompass the benefits of Client/Server systems, while retaining the advantage of the Intranet. By combining the two network environments, we have permitted users to access the same database using either the Thin Client or the Client from the Client/Server. Some users may opt to install both Client and Thin Client on their machines for the best flexibility.

Hybrid Network Benefits of Hybrid Approach:
  • Client/Server access provides high-quality interfaces for specialized applications
  • Intranet/Internet access provides simple, platform-independent access from any location
  • Less restrictions on equipment usage – legacy systems can be used
  • Ease of information deployment to the Internet
  • Decreased levels of maintenance for Thin Clients
  • Provides off-site access to users – perfect for telecommuters
The beauty the Hybrid Model is that the user will have access to the appropriate client for the appropriate application. For instance, the Thin Client can be employed for information transfer, reference and data entry. Businesses often use the Thin Client for Call Center Support or General Sales. Thin Clients are ideal for telecommuting and also offer universal access to company information (for example, dial-in using a Laptop from an airport or a customer’s site).

The Client (of Client/Server), on the other hand, would be employed for complex forms/queries, and applications requiring a high level of security. The Database Administrators would benefit from using the Client portion of the Client/Server model.
